Question 1

Does solar work in Ireland?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Payback times are down to 5 years or less for many homes. Solar can typically reduce annual electricity costs by around a thousand euros per year or more, which is a great hedge against rising electricity prices.

Question 2

How much will it cost?

Accepted Answer

It depends on the system size, whether you include a battery and if you're getting competitive quotes from trusted installers. The price can range from under €5,000 to over €10,000. Prices also vary a lot between installers, even for similar systems.

Question 3

What financial supports are available?

Accepted Answer

The government provides support in three ways: the SEAI Solar PV grant, selling solar back to the grid via the Clean Export Guarantee (CEG), and zero VAT on solar for homes.

Question 4

Do I need a battery with solar panels?

Accepted Answer

A battery is optional. The main benefit is storing your own solar electricity to use later, which means you rely less on the grid. A standard battery adds about €2,000 to the system cost and usually leads to slightly longer payback times overall.

Question 5

What is a solar PV system?

Accepted Answer

A solar photovoltaic (PV) system converts sunlight into electricity. It typically consists of PV modules connected to an inverter, producing electricity that can be used in the home or exported to the grid.

Question 6

Do I need to clean my solar panels?

Accepted Answer

Ireland's wind and rainfall usually provide good natural cleaning, so most solar panels do not need overly frequent cleaning. A practical guide is roughly once a year, but check for visible soiling and monitor performance in your app.
